Match Preview: USA and Scotland name squads for U19M Las Vegas Clash

The first internationals of the year take place in Las Vegas on Friday 27 February as USA host Scotland in an U19 men’s and senior women’s and men’s triple header. The games take place Coronado High School with 15.45, 18.00 and 20.15 kick offs respectively, local time.

At U19s, Scotland won 32-10 win when the nations met in Serbia at the 2024 European Championship. Both are set to compete in the 2026 U19s event in France in July and will be using this game to give a new cohort of players experience ahead of the summer.

USARL chair, Matt Goschnick, commented: “The USARL board is excited to see all the squads get together and to build on last year’s event here. It shows a commitment to pathways and development.”

Scotland U19 men’s head coach, Mick Piper, noted: “Everyone involved with the Scotland Rugby League Under 19’s programme are incredibly excited about the game. The opportunity for these young men to travel to the United States and play a competitive friendly, in Las Vegas, is just amazing.”

Scotland came out on top, but USA showed plenty of promise in first of a triple header in Las Vegas between the two nations.

USA came out of the blocks, posting their first score with just two minutes on the clock as Nehemiah Fauolo used his strength to bounce off two defenders before finding his way through to the line, giving Jacob Dylan Meng an east conversion to extend the lead.

Scotland his back as Isaac Maclean powered his way through in the middle of the park, with Oscar Ellicott-McCulloch kicking the first of his five conversions to level the scores. Scotland moved into the lead as Elicott-McCulloch picked up the ball from an incorrect feed of the scrum and raced in to the surprise of the home side.

Drayson Moglia struck back for the USA as the ball came the full width of the field from right to left, with tempers flaring as the ball was grounded. Meng couldn’t add the extras to level.

Lewis Wright barged his way through the middle of the park to push Scotland further ahead with Lucas Anderson-Moore showing some great footwork to post an almost carbon copy score a few moments after to conclude the half’s scoring.

Scotland started the second half strongly as Jacob Walker ran it in from 20m out in second set of the half to give Scotland a commanding lead.

Much more determined play following from USA, with both sides trading ends for a further twenty minutes before an injury to a USA player halted play for some time, resulting in the match ultimately being abandoned. 

Both teams will take the valuable experience in the European Rugby League U19s Championship later this year.
